Steven Sharfstein, M.D. – Recipient of Institute of Living's C. Charles Burlingame Award
The Southern Psychiatric Association is proud to announce that SPA member Steven Sharfstein, M.D. was recently awarded the Institute of Living's C. Charles Burlingame Award for recognition of outstanding leadership and lifetime achievement in psychiatry. Congraulations!!
Arthur M. Freeman, III., M.D. – Named Leading Physician of the World
SPA Member Arthur Freeman, III., M.D., was named a Leading Pysician of the World by the International Association of Healthcare Professionals, which selects physicians who have demonstrated excellence in patient care, leadership, and achievement, Dr. Freeman, has been in practice more than 49 years and is also a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Tulane University.
Dr. Freeman served as Vice Chair of Psychiatry at UAB, where he was a professor for 14 years, then became Chair of Psychiatry and later Dean at the LSU School of Medicine – Shreveport. He has also served as Chair of Psychiatry at the University of Tennessee School of Medicine–Memphis. He has conducted over 100 clinical trials of psychiatric drugs and has written over 90 articles.
Anita Everett, M.D. – APA President-Elect – Appointed Head of the New SAMSHA Office
The Southern Psychiatric Association is pleased to announce that SPA Member Anita Everett, M.D., was chosen as the APA President-Elect in February and became the Chief Medical Officer at the Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration in September 2017.
The Office of the Chief Medical Officer is a new position, and Dr. Everett expects that in her new role she will play an important part in representing SAMSHA’s clinical perspectives to other parts of the Deptartment of Health & Human Services and to other governmental agencies and will work to improve funding that would lead to better prevention and treatment for mental disorders, including substance use.
Recently, she was the Division Director at the Johns Hopkins Community & General Psychiatry Program at its Bayview campus in east Baltimore. While there, she conducted research concerning people who suffer from long-term mental disorders who live in urban and underserved areas. She has also consulted concerning mental health services in Iraq and Afghanistan.
