Steven Sharfstein, M.D. – Recipient of APA Assembly's Profile of Courage Award
The Southern Psychiatric Association is proud to announce that SPA member and former APA President Steven Sharfstein, M.D. was recently presented with the American Psychiatric Association Assembly's Profile of Courage Award honoring him for his "years-long battle against ethical violations in psychiatry to support the highest ethical standards in psychiatry, including not participating in torture and prisoner interrogrations." Dr. Sharfstein was president of the APA in 2005-2006 and fighting against instances which he saw the potential misuse of psychiatry was a hallmark of his presidential year. Shilpa Srinivasan, M.D. – Recipient of ABPN 2016 Faculty Innovation in Education Award
The Southern Psychiatric Association is pleased to announce that Dr. Shilpa Srinivasan received the 2016 Faculty Innovation in Education Award by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). Dr. Srinivasan plans to develop and implement an innovative online curriculum to train psychiatric residents in Motivational Interviewing to promote behavior change in patients with substance use disorders to enhance patient care and management. Each year, up to two psychiatry and two neurology recipients are awarded this prize, and the Southern is proud to have Dr. Srinivasan as a member recipient.
Merry Miller, M.D. – Announces New Publication on "Finding Your Emotional Balance: A Guide for Women"
The Southern Psychiatric Association is pleased to endorse Dr. Miller's new publication, Finding Your Emotional Balance: A Guide for Women. published by Johns Hopkins University Press in November of 2015. Dr. Miller writes, "Women are twice as likely as men to become depressed. While they seek help for mental disorders more often than men, they also seek to help others, trying to keep everyone happy while taking care of parents, spouses, and children. Sometimes, doing it all is doing too much. This book offers women of all ages advice for coping with life's challenges while increasing its joys. Timothy Jennings, M.D. – Recipient of Champion of Health Award
The Southern Psychiatric Association is pleased to announced that its member, Timothy Jennings, M.D., has been named a Champion of Health by True Health Broadcasting Network in association with Health Institute for Preventive Care, Access, Research and Education and True Health TV and he will be presented with the "Legacy Champion of Health" award at a black tie gala on April 9, 2016 at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, Georgia. The award is being presented "because of his unselfish commitment to community health exemplified by his leadership in the community and as author of "The God-Shaped Brain" and "Could It Be This Simple? A Biblical Model for Healing the Mind."
